I am Juliette Vandermeer, and this site is a working record of how ordinary things are actually made, kept and repaired.
Most of what I know here came from ruining the first attempt. I oiled a table that did not want oil. I sharpened a knife on the wrong side of a stone for about two years. I washed a wool coat and turned it into a smaller wool coat. Each of those taught me something a tidy instruction list would not have, which is why the pieces here tend to start with the mistake and work backwards to the reason for it.
Why the mistake comes first
A step in a list is easy to skip when you do not know what it is for. A step you have watched go wrong is not. So rather than open with do this, then this, I try to say what happens if you do not, and then the instruction usually explains itself.
What is on the benches

What this is not
It is not a review site and it is not a shop. There are no star ratings here, no scores, no best of anything, and no invented product cards. I name materials and methods rather than brands, because a method outlives a product line and because a rating implies a precision that one person’s bench does not have.
How a piece gets written
I do the job, usually more than once, and I write it down while my hands still remember which part was awkward. If a piece rests on a single afternoon it says so. Where I am describing something I have done for years, I say that instead, because the two are not the same kind of evidence and should not read the same.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, tell me. The page gets fixed with a note saying what changed rather than being quietly rewritten. Write to hello@livingbeautifullydaily.org.
