For years I made my bed by pulling the comforter up and smoothing it with my hand, and for years it looked passable for about an hour before the top layer slid sideways and the corners came untucked. The problem was never the comforter. It was that I was treating the whole bed as one layer instead of building it, sheet by sheet, so that each layer actually anchored the one above it.
Start from the mattress, not the top
A made bed is a stack of layers that each hold their own tension, and if the bottom layer is loose, everything above it will be loose too by mid-morning. The fitted sheet has to sit flat against the mattress with no bunching at the corners. If your fitted sheet pops off the corner of the mattress overnight, it is either the wrong size for your mattress depth or it has lost its elastic, and no amount of smoothing the top layers will compensate for that loose foundation.
The hospital corner, done properly
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the actual reason a made bed holds its shape rather than sliding apart.
- Lay the flat sheet or top sheet over the bed with even overhang on all three open sides.
- Tuck the foot end straight down into the mattress, all the way along the width.
- At each bottom corner, lift the hanging fabric straight out from the mattress so it forms a triangular flap, then tuck the bottom point of that triangle under the mattress.
- Fold the hanging triangle down against the side of the mattress and tuck the whole fold under, so the corner sits flat and square rather than loose.
Once you have done this on both foot corners, the sheet is anchored at three points, not just draped, and that tension is what keeps the whole bed from sliding out of shape as you get in and out of it through the week.
Layer order, and why it is not arbitrary
Fitted sheet, then flat sheet if you use one, then any blanket, then the comforter or duvet, each layer tucked or weighted slightly less than the one below it at the foot of the bed. The bottom layers should be tucked in tight. The top layer, the comforter, should not be tucked at the foot at all if you actually sleep under it, because a fully tucked top layer will pull loose the first night you use the bed and then never lie flat again. Leave the top layer loose enough to use, and let the tucked layers underneath do the structural work of holding everything square.

Pillows last, and in a specific order
Sleeping pillows go against the headboard, largest and firmest at the back, flatter ones in front, so the stack steps down in height rather than sitting in a flat row. Decorative pillows, if you use them, go in front of that stack, and should be fluffed by hand, corners pinched slightly inward, rather than just set down flat. A pillow that is only ever placed and never fluffed goes permanently flat within a few weeks, because the fill inside settles into whatever shape it was left in most often.
Why a duvet without a top sheet slides more
If you sleep with a duvet and no flat sheet under it, the duvet cover is in direct contact with the fitted sheet, and cotton against cotton has enough friction to hold position reasonably well through the night. A duvet cover that has a lot of drape, or a duvet insert that has shifted inside its cover, will slide toward one side over a few nights. A quick fix that most people never think of is a set of small ties or snap tabs inside the corners of the duvet cover, matched to loops sewn into the corners of the insert, which keeps the insert from migrating and bunching at one end.
The five-minute version
Tuck the fitted sheet fully flat, use hospital corners on the bottom layers to anchor the structure, leave only the top layer loose enough to actually sleep under, and fluff the pillows by hand rather than just setting them down. A bed built this way still looks made at the end of the day, not just at eight in the morning, because the tension holding it together is in the layers you cannot see, not the one you smooth by hand last.
